Gulls attack whales in Valdés Peninsula - Argentina





      These images were captured by me with Drone and camera using a telephoto lenses in Valdés Peninsula and it worries me very much what is happening with the whales...

      The Kelp gulls population has increased over the years. It is likely that exploitation of human feeding sources, especially  dumps and fishery discards.

      Since 1970s, when gulls first learned to pull pieces of skin from the backs of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) ,  the number of attacks on whales has increased dramatically, scientists say. They found around 99 per cent of whale calves carry wounds on their backs from gulls.

      Between 2003 and 2014 at least 626 calves died in the Valdés peninsula – an average of 50 deaths a year.

      Researchers from the University of Utah and the Programa de Monitoreo Sanitario Ballena Franca Austral investigate if these deaths are connected with kelp gulls attacks...
